Frequently Asked Questions

What is Green Plastic?

Green Plastic is the first Pakistan women-led startup working on plastic pollution reduction by developing 100% biodegra-dable bags made from potato peels for everyone. This not only reduces plastic pollution but also minimizes organic waste.

How are Green Plastic bags made?

Green Plastic is made by extracting starch from potato peels.

Are Green Plastic bags truly biodegradable?

The Green potato starch-based bags are 100% biodegradable in the natural environment within 6 months, whereas the green oxo-biodegradable bags containing recyclable pellets require optimum conditions to degrade.

Can Green Plastic bags be recycled?

Yes, Green Plastic bags are recyclable if they are available in sufficient quantities to be recycled.

Is only potato starch used in the composition of Green Plastic?

In the composition of 100% biodegradable bags, potato starch and organic additives are used, whereas, in the composition of oxo-biodegradable bags, 60% recyclable plastic pellets are used.

Are Green Plastic bags truly biodegradable?

The Green potato starch-based bags are 100% biodegradable in the natural environment within 6 months, whereas the green oxo-biodegradable bags containing recyclable pellets require optimum conditions to degrade.

Will Green plastic products release harmful pollutants into the environment?

Green plastic products do not release any harmful pollutants such as methane and CO2 into the environment. However, there is a negligible possibility of CO2 emission upon burning.

Can Green Plastic bags be recycled?

Yes, Green Plastic bags are recyclable if they are available in sufficient quantities to be recycled.

What initiatives is Green Plastic involved in to reduce plastic pollution?

To reduce plastic usage, Green Plastic is involved in multiple initiatives. It is not solely focused on manufacturing plastic bags but is also working on creating an efficient online plastic and organic waste collection system. Additionally, it is engaged in recycling activities, including working with recycled plastic to create environmentally friendly bricks and tiles. These initiatives aim to achieve a circular economy and environmental sustainability in line with the goal of zero waste.

What is the difference between 100% biodegradable plastic and oxo-biodegradable plastic?

100% Biodegradable Plastic: 100% biodegradable plastics are composed of organic materials, such as corn starch or potato starch, along with natural additives. These materials are designed to undergo microbial decomposition when exposed to the environment. Bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms break down the organic components, leading to the complete degradation of the plastic. This process is typically more environmentally friendly as it results in the conversion of plastic into natural byproducts. The timeframe for decomposition is relatively short, usually ranging from a few months to one year, depending on the environmental conditions.

Oxo-Biodegradable Plastic: Oxo-biodegradable plastics, on the other hand, are conventional or recycled plastics (e.g., polyethylene) blended with additives that accelerate the degradation process. These additives trigger a chemical breakdown of the plastic, resulting in fragmentation into smaller pieces. Additionally, oxo-biodegradable bags are less expensive and less toxic compared to traditional plastic because they aim to break down more quickly than traditional petroleum-based plastics (Maximum 4-5 years)in the presence of oxygen, sunlight, heat, and mechanical stress over time, producing end products such as H2O, CO2, and biomass.

Does the green plastic bag retain the same mechanical properties as traditional petroleum-based plastic?

Yes, Green plastic bags retain the same physical, thermal, and mechanical properties as traditional petroleum-based plastic. Additionally, they possess good sealing ability.
